Malaysia's Anwar demands prosecution of top judges
(AP)12 May 2008

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim demanded Monday that high-profile judicial and government figures be prosecuted for allegedly manipulating the appointments of judges.

Anwar called for tough measures to restore public confidence in the judiciary after a government inquiry panel reportedly found that a top lawyer had conspired with senior judges and other political and business allies to broker judicial appointments.

The scandal erupted in September when Anwar leaked a video that allegedly showed prominent lawyer V.K. Lingam speaking by telephone in 2001 to a former top judge, Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim, about the promotions of judges.

Earlier this year the government appointed a panel to check the video's authenticity. The investigators completed their report last week, but government leaders said they were still considering whether to publicize the results.

The Star and New Straits Times newspapers, citing unidentified officials, reported during the weekend that the inquiry panel believed that Lingam was talking to Ahmad Fairuz and that the substance of their conversation was what Anwar had claimed. More...

KUALA LUMPUR: Kalabakan MP Datuk Seri Abdul Gapur Salleh has called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to reshuffle the Cabinet to give Sabahan MPs key ministerial posts by the end of the year.

He also asked for an increase of oil royalty from 5% to 20% so that the RM500mil allocation would be increased to RM2bil and a lot of problems could be solved with that fund, he said.
"We can solve the problems ourselves with that big chunk of money,'' he said while debating at the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

At the Parliament lobby, when asked whether he would leave Barisan Nasional to join another party, Ghapur said no. “If we can solve the problem from within, why should we look outside?" he said.

He also denied meeting with Parti Keadilan Rakyat de factor leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

PETALING JAYA (May 12, 2008): Pakatan Rakyat leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today confirmed that several Members of Parliament from Barisan Nasional (BN) and its component parties will be crossing over soon, fuelling speculations that the ruling coalition may lose its grip on power.

In a packed press conference in his Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Section 16 office today, Anwar disclosed that the respective MPs will make announcements by themselves soon.

"I don't necessarily need to make it. They might do it themselves," said Anwar.

"We have the numbers and we will determine the timing (to announce the crossovers) after observing necessary rules and procedures under the constitution," said Anwar.

"BN and and Umno are not at ease now as they are panicking," claimed the former deputy prime minister.

"They are bringing up issues of racial sentiments and survivals of Malays, and we sense that this might not go down well if we make the announcements now," he added.

"We have to take into account many issues before making any announcement but let them (BN) speculate," he said.

Anwar added that the defections will be carried out according to the law and no "money" will be involved. More....

Exclusive Interview With The Gua Musang Umno
2008-05-12 17:20

Former Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh expressed his concern that the economic recession in the United States, Europe and Japan will soon hit Malaysia. However, he has yet to see any measures taken by the government for such an eventuality, nor does he know if the government has the ability to deal with it.

In the exclusive interview with Sin Chew Daily, he has repeatedly pointed out that he is very worried that our country will soon face an economic recession, because the government leaders spend their time and energy only on the political front. It is doubtful if they come to the attention of the coming of another economic crisis.

“I am very worried about the country's economy. If we have not responded carefully or have not prepared for it, we will be in trouble. I'm not sure when it will come, but the United States, Europe and Japan have been facing a serious recession. Meanwhile, they are our main markets.”

Dua minggu lalu dah naik RM42 ringgit.Sambil-sambil tu saya tanam la cili, lengkuas, kantan, daun kesum, pegaga, serai, cekur, kunyit, belimbing buluh, limau nipis, limau kasturi, ulam raja, dauk kari, pokok mengkudu dan beberapa herba kampung yang lain. Kata orang, sesak-sesak bolehlah.
